jokingly suggested that tech fans would be able to upgrade their old iPhone by putting a slug of metal into the headphone jack.

The website wrote: "This isn't 2009. Your phone doesn't have a floppy drive, and it shouldn't have a headphone connector either.

"When we made iPhone 6 and 6s, the world wasn't ready for the future. Now, it is. Apple Plug is the perfect solution. Fill in your archaic headphone connector with beautiful aluminium and plug yourself into the future."

On Twitter, one user gently mocked Apple's continual drive to make it's products ever sleeker and more minimal.

He wrote: "iPhone 7: No headphone jack. iPhone 8: No home button. iPhone 9: Wireless charging, no charging port.

"Soon the iPhone will just disappear..."

But it was the removal of the headphone jack which prompted the most jokes, as people came to terms with the fact their new iPhone wouldn't work with any of their preexisting headphones, hifis or other audio gadgets.

The airpods will cost £159 and have proven to be such a talking point that The Guardian tweeted: "Earth to Apple: wireless Airpod headphones are like a tampon without a string."

And who can argue with that?
