MAST FIGHT OF THE PROMS

Bitter Remain losers plan to hijack the Proms with thousands of EU flags

A crowd-funding campaign is already under way to buy 5,000 blue EU pennants

BITTER Remain supporters are planning to hijack the Last Night of the Proms by handing out thousands of EU FLAGS to party-goers.

They hope by dishing out the blue and yellow pennants at the traditionally patriotic event they will some how drum up support for Brussels.

The culmination of the eight-week celebration of classical music sees tens of thousands across the UK  waving the Union Flag during performances of Rule Britannia, Jerusalem and Pomp and Circumstance.

But this weekend’s Last Night of the Proms will have a very different feel if the anti-Brexit group get their way and hijack the event.

A crowd-funding campaign is already under way to buy 5,000 blue EU flags.

Volunteers will then give them out to members of the public ahead of the sold-out event to wave during the night, the reveals.

Organisers hope to transform the evening into one which shows “solidarity with the EU”.

MPs have now called for the BBC to intervene immediately, to prevent the night being “hijacked by an attempted rejection of the will of the British people”.

The idea, which originated from anti-Brexit campaigners on Facebook, has already received £1,175 in donations, with 60 people pledging their support in amounts from £5 to £300.

Organisers plan to design flags with the EU symbol on one side and the Union flag on the other to avoid “alienating” Leave-voting Prom-goers.

One participant argued: “That should get all but the staunchest of Brexiteers onside.”

Bill Cash MP, chairman of the European Union scrutiny committee, said: “I would urge the BBC not to allow the last night of the proms to be hi-jacked by an attempted rejection of the will of the British people. They should take steps to make that clear.

“The climax of the last night is the singing of Rule Britannia – which is the great hymn to Britain and certainly not to the European Union.”

Peter Bone MP added: “The Last Night of the Proms is an inspiring, uplifting British event, not an EU event – so for it to be hijacked is cheap politics.”

A spokesman for the BBC said: "Flags are a traditional part of the Last Night of the Proms and audience members are not prevented from bringing them into the Hall.

"The Proms is not a political platform and, as always, we are sure there will be a wide range of flags on display."

The Last Night of the Proms is due to be broadcast on BBC Two at 7.15pm on Saturday.
