Did a bridge collapse near Frick Park, Pittsburgh?

FRICK Park is known as the largest municipal park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and covers over 640 acres.

Did a bridge collapse near Frick Park, Pittsburgh?

It was announced on January 28, 2022, that emergency crews were dispatched to Pittsburgh’s Frick Park.

According to officials, a bridge had collapsed at the border of the city’s Point Breeze neighborhood and a strong smell of natural gas was in the air.

Officials were asking the public to avoid the Forbes and Braddock area as a result.

The collapse came just hours before President 's scheduled meeting to speak about his $1.2trillion infrastructure plan, which includes bridge maintenance.

Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey says infrastructure laws are needed more than ever.

"This is critical that we get this funding and we're glad to have the president coming today," the mayor said.

Biden is scheduled to speak at Carnegie Mellon University - located just 25 minutes away from the bridge.

The mayor also revealed that he had received calls from Pennsylvania's governor and  offering support following the bridge collapse.

Were there any cars on the bridge?

There were reportedly multiple cars and a Port Authority bus involved in the bridge collapse, according to .

Photos from the scene showed multiple cars trapped below the snow-covered bridge, with another seen dangling from a portion of the platform that stayed intact.

Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire Chief Darryl Jones confirmed 10 people sustained minor injuries, but no deaths were reported.

Who is Frick Park named after?

Frick Park is part of Pittsburgh's historic region and first opened in 1927.

The park extends from the northern borders in Point Breeze down to the Monongahela River and is known for its extensive trails and wooded slopes.

The park is named after Henry Clay Frick who was an American industrialist, financier, and art patron born in West Overton, Pennsylvania.

Frick, who passed away on December 2, 1919, famously founded the H. C. Frick & Company coke manufacturing company and served as the chairman of the Carnegie Steel Company.

From 1881 to 1919, he was married to Adelaide Howard Childs Frick, with whom he welcomed four children, including Child, Henry Clay Frick, Jr., Helen and Martha.
