I’m 83 and I’ve worked at the same firm for almost 70 years – but I won’t retire any time soon
DEDICATED Brian Chorley has worked for the same firm for almost 70 years and has no plans to retire.
Brian, 83, who has never had a day off sick, started with shoe giant C. & J. Clark in 1953 when he was 15.
He took a short break when its factory HQ shut but returned when the Clarks Village shopping centre opened on the site.
Grandad Brian is now a member of its guest services team, which greets visitors to the complex of 93 shops in Street, Somerset.
He spent some time on furlough during the pandemic but could not wait to return.
Brian, whose first pay packet was £2 and 3 shillings, said: “I’ve always wanted to work.
"When I started, we were quite poor. Dad was in the Army. I still love working now.

"I don’t want to sit in an armchair all day — it’s boring. I want to get out and see people.”
Brian, whose wife Pauline died in 2014, looks to Sir David Attenborough — still working at 95 — as his role model.
He added: “I’ve just passed a health check with flying colours and I want to go on as long as I can — I want to be like Sir David.”
