Christmas mince pies on sale in Asda 100 days early…and they go out of date in October
Shoppers left in shock as supermarkets including Tesco, Co-op and Sainsbury’s stock shelves with traditional winter treats
SHOPPERS have been left in shock after seeing Asda selling mince pies just a couple of days into September.
And to make things worse, the festive treats – marketed as “Christmas mince pies” – go out of date in October.
So anyone thinking of stocking up on their favourite seasonal snack now and saving them until December should think again, as they will be gone off a full two months before Christmas.
Gobsmacked shoppers posted pics on social media after spotting the treats on sale at a branch of Asda in Kent.
Mum-of-three Julie Delange, 37, from Canterbury, said: "I couldn't believe it – I saw Christmas mince pies on sale in Asda but the date on the box was two months before Christmas.
"I thought it was a misprint! But when I checked the other boxes on the shelf they had the same date – October 26th 2016.
"The stores are obviously out to cash in on Christmas as soon as they can.
"But who on earth would buy Christmas mince pies in September which go off before the end of October?"
It might only be September but Asda are not alone, with the Co-op also getting in on the action.
They are stocking their own mince pies which also run out in October – but a full week sooner.
And Tesco and Sainsbury’s have been flogging the traditional winter treats even earlier.
In fact, sales of Sainsbury's mince pies soared three months ago in June – a boost put down to unusually cold weather for the time of year, according to the online publication The Grocer.
But not all the high street grocery giants have been so keen to jump the gun.
Upmarket supermarkets Waitrose and Marks & Spencer have stood firm and resisted the urge to reach for the mince pies…for now.
