She said the country must “de-escalate and engage in meaningful talks” as tensions grow on the Ukrainian border.

The US has suggested Moscow is preparing a “false-flag operation” to trigger incursion into the neighbouring country.

The warning was echoed by Defence Secretary Ben Wallace who said there would be “consequences” over any Russian aggression.

He had previously said the UK would “stand up to bullies”.

Mr Wallace met with Nordic partners this week, including Finland which shares a border with Russia.

He also met counterparts from Sweden and Norway.

He said: “The UK and our Nordic partners are united in our approach to upholding European security.”
