The attacker, who police believe is known to the victims, fled the scene before emergency services arrived and is now at large.

It has been reported that the woman who was stabbed was pregnant but this has not been confirmed by police.

Both her and the male victim's injuries are not life threatening.

One eye-witness reported seeing a young woman being treated for what appeared to be "neck injuries" as paramedics attended to a man lying by the road.

An air ambulance landed on nearby Turnham Green and police are now appealing for witnesses to the shocking incident.

Artist Fiona Daly, 46, told the she was walking to the post office when she heard alarms and sirens “going off”.

She said: “There were about six ambulances and police cars just off the High Road.

“There were blood stains outside the Heath Centre where it looked like someone had been treated.

“The air ambulance landed on the green and the paramedics raced out to treat someone.

“I saw a lady, who I think was pregnant, in the back of a car wearing a white t-shirt that was covered in blood."

Other witnesses said the knifeman chucked the weapon over a wall before fleeing.

Mary Mcvey, 53, said: "While I didn't see the attack I witnessed the aftermath.

"I was just leaving a shop when I heard a lady shout 'Stop! Stop!' I don't know if that was to her attacker or to the police.

"She was bleeding from the back of her neck and I heard her say that someone had just come up behind her and stabbed her.

"There was a gentleman who I think must've witnessed the attack who told the officers that the assailant was still nearby and one of the officers went off with him.

"The other officer was looking after the victim and administered First Aid. She was fully conscious and coherent throughout, but clearly very distraught and in shock.

"While she was bleeding, it wasn't profusely. I think- and hope - the air ambulance was a precaution."

Another witness, 45, said: "The attacker walked by my car with the knife in clear view. I watched him off towards Sainsbury's and throw the knife over a wall and reported it to the police officers.

"I saw the man on the crossing opposite the health centre on Dolman Road where he fell down and got treatment.

"The attacker threw the knife over a wall, on Dolman Roadd, as he headed towards Sainsbury's. I think that wall is for the school playground."

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: "Police were called at about 6.15pm to reports of two people stabbed in Kirton Close, Chiswick.

"Officers, paramedics and London's Air Ambulance all attended the scene.

"The victims - a man and a woman - have been taken to hospital for treatment.

"Officers believe the pair were attacked by a man who then fled the scene. It is believed all parties are known to each other.

"There have been no arrests; inquiries continue. Officers from Hounslow are investigating. Road closures remain in place around Kirton Close."
