On the eve of the anniversary of the January 6, 2020 riots, former US President Jimmy Carter for the New York Times titled I Fear for Our Democracy.
In the opinion piece, Jimmy Carter opined that democracy within the US was being threatened when he wrote: "Our great nation now teeters on the brink of a widening abyss."
He went on to state: "Without immediate action, we are at genuine risk of civil conflict and losing our precious democracy. Americans must set aside differences and work together before it is too late."

Furthermore, Carter chided some politicians in the op-ed when he stated: "Promoters of the lie that the election was stolen have taken over one political party and stoked distrust in our electoral systems."
He added: "Politicians have leveraged the distrust they have created to enact laws that empower partisan legislatures to intervene in election processes." Furthermore, he stated that politicians "seek to win by any means, and many Americans are being persuaded to think and act likewise, threatening to collapse the foundations of our security and democracy with breathtaking speed."

At the age of 97, he has been still been fairly active, with his op-ed for the New York Times on January 5, 2022, as an example of his engagement with the press.
