Who was Bible John?

Bible John was a serial killer who attacked women in Scotland.

Between the years of 1968 and 1969, the killer was believed to be responsible for at least three murders in the wider Glasgow area.

For decades, Glasgow police have tirelessly searched for clues on who could be behind the crimes, with very little information coming forward about the slippery suspect.

After his third murder, the moniker Bible John began to circulate through the media, giving rise to widespread fear over the attacks.

The nickname came after a key witness described a man who picked up women yet quoted extensively from the Old Testament and frowned on adultery.

The case would also be the first time in Scotland in which the Crown Office authorised publication of a composite drawing of an individual suspected of murder.

What happened to him?

No one knows where Bible John is, or what happened to him, as he has never been caught.

He has never been identified and the case remains both unsolved and one of the most extensive manhunts in Scottish criminal history.

The known movements and style of convicted serial killer and rapist Peter Tobin have given rise to suspicions that he may be Bible John.

Although, this theory has never been proved, and there is little evidence that would suggest the theory is true.

In January 2022, the , said that he doesn't believe that Tobin was the infamous Bible John.

He said that while he initially thought they could have been the same person, his opinion has changed after a chat with retired  David Swindle - the former lead detective on the case of Bible John.

Mr Hamilton said: “Bible John is probably dead and has taken his secrets to the grave with him.

“That’s the end of that story, basically.”

Who were Bible John's victims?

The first of his victims was Patricia Docker, a 25-year-old nurse, with her body being found just yards away from her home in Langside Place.

The attack took place on February 13, 1968, and would prove to be the first in a series of linked killings.

His next strike took place on August 15, 1969, with Jemima McDonald’s body being found in an old tenement building on Mackeith Street in Bridgeton.

She was a 31-year-old mum of three, who had been enjoying a night out when her sister realised she never returned home.

Helen Puttock was found dead later that same year in October, with her body being discovered in her own back garden.

BBC Two will air the second episode in their two-part documentary, The Hunt For Bible John, on January 11, 2022, at 9pm.
