‘Obsessed’ man on trial for harassing Emily Maitlis says he felt ‘scorned’ by BBC host
Edward Vines denies breaching an order that prevents him from contacting the Newsnight presenter
A MAN who developed an “obsession” with BBC presenter Emily Maitlis claimed she reported him for harassment after Jill Dando was killed in 1999, a court heard.
Edward Vines, 46, denies breaching an order preventing him from contacting the Newsnight star, 45, who he studied with at Cambridge.
A jury was told he sent her two letters last year centred around his belief that she had acted “scornfully” after he told her he loved her in 1990.
His love sparked an “obsession” in his mind.
Vines, of Oxford, wrote that her allegations were “largely made up” and that she would not admit she loved him.
On Miss Dando’s death, he said: “I don’t believe you felt scared about the murder of Jill Dando.”
The trial at Oxford crown court continues.
