Mum and young sons forced to move out after ‘toilet explosion’ flooded home with raw sewage

A MUM and her young family were forced to move out of their home after a "toilet explosion" flooded their home with raw sewage.

Awen Hardy left her home in Chilwell, Nottingham, last month after discovering every room in her house was covered in waste.

The 31-year-old mum noticed that her toilet had become blocked on November 28 - the day before the "explosion" - and reported it to Broxtowe Borough Council.

After moving her two sons, aged six and eight, to her friends' house she returned to their flat to do some painting the next day.

It was then that she discovered her entire flat was covered in sewage.

"As I walked into the flat it was just literally full of water," she told

"It looked like the toilet had just exploded everywhere. Honestly the smell, it's like nothing I've ever smelt before put it that way."

Ms Hardy said that she immediately called the council but said that there had been "no urgency" and "no apology".

And the issue is still no closer to being fixed despite the mum-of-two having called the council at least 32 times.

"I very much feel like I'm being mugged off, really," she said.

"I had new carpets put down on the Friday before it happened but the fact they have left someone's home like that for nine days is just unbelievable."

Being away from home has been particularly hard for her two kids but especially her youngest son who has autism.

"My oldest son is also quite emotional about it, I've had Christmas presents that have been posted through the door that have now been ruined," she said.

Ms Hardy was offered temporary accommodation by Broxtowe Council, however she refused it as it only had one bedroom and claimed that the area is a "known area for drug users".

A spokesperson for the council told Notts Live: "We have had a team at the property on a daily basis. 

"This is a very complex and unusual case and to date, despite thorough investigation, we have not yet been able to resolve the situation.

"We are working with multiple contractors including Severn Trent Water to try and resolve the issue.

"We are extremely sorry that the family are going through this and we hope to resolve the issue as soon as we possibly can.”

Broxtowe Borough Council has been contacted for comment.
