When will it snow in New York in 2024?

The Concrete Jungle can expect its first snow on Saturday evening, January 6, 2024.

The Department of Emergency Management issued a weather alert announcing the city will see about 1 to 3 inches.

The storm is set to fall heavier in Upstate New York and Connecticut where they're expected to see up to 3 to 12 inches of snow.

Mayor Eric Adams spoke on the incoming weather saying: "With initial forecasts predicting a potentially significant storm hitting the tri-state area this weekend, our agencies are prepared to handle anything that’s thrown our way.

"We’ll continue to keep New Yorkers updated about what to expect and our preparations for the storm."

Weather meteorologists are tracking an additional snowstorm heading to New York by Tuesday, January 9, 2024, however, they believe it will be too warm for snow to hit the ground.

Instead, New York can expect heavy rain.

When does it typically snow in New York?

New Yorkers can typically expect snow on December 24, according to statistics. 

Rob Frydlewicz, a New York City weather historian, told that the date is an estimate, as sometimes snow could arrive earlier.

However, as of January 2024, New York City has gone nearly two years without an inch of snow.

In 2020, the first inch of snow occurred on December 16 and brought over 10.4 inches, making it the second-greatest snowfall of that winter.

The earliest snow New York has ever experienced was back in 2012 when flakes fell before Halloween on October 29, measuring 2.9 inches of snow.

Back in February 2021, winter storm Orlena ravaged the North East causing over 2,000 flight cancellations across the United States.

  5. Wyoming — Average Annual Snowfall: 77.33 inches

While New Hampshire and Maine saw the most snow in 2023, Vermont usually has the most snow each year.
