Salt Bae boss makes shocking confession about his gold-covered £1,450 steak at London Nusr-Et restaurant

THE boss of Salt Bae's controversial London restaurant has admitted gold leaf on its £1,450 steaks does NOT improve the taste.

Nusr-Et Steakhouse has been mocked for its astronomical prices since the Insta-famous chef opened its doors in plush Knightsbridge this year.

Diners with deep pockets can expect to fork out £1,450 for a gold-gilded tomahawk steak, another £630 for a hunk of beef and £100 on a burger.

Mehmed - the boss of the pricey eaterie - has admitted covering a piece of meat in gold leaf "doesn't improve the taste or change the quality".

But he insisted the food is "the best in London" so diners are willing to pay the extortionate amount.

Mehmed told : "Some people, they want to just talk.

"People have complained because they have seen bills on social media for people who’ve paid £10,000 for a bottle of wine.

"But you can find these prices all around London. The service and the quality we are providing is extremely high.

"It’s more interactive than most restaurants - we cook and prepare the food in front of you, like our traditional baklava, which is a very popular dessert."

Salt Bae - whose real name is Nusret Gökçe - found fame for his salt sprinkling technique on Instagram.

Since then, the butcher-turned-chef has become a celeb favourite - with Wayne and Coleen Rooney, David Beckham and Gemma Collins all eating at his London restaurant.

Mehmed believes the eaterie is so popular because the brand is "well known" globally.

He said: "We show hospitality, we show everyone to their table and cut the meat in front of them."

Salt Bae has already left the capital just two months to open his newest outpost in Saudia Arabia.

Diners in the new restaurant - the chef's 28th - have already branded it a "waste of money".
