'That cake looks s**t'

New bride burst into tears when M&S boss texted her to say £130 wedding cake she bought from store ‘looks s**t’

Manager of Derbyshire Marks & Spencer accidentally texted customer to say the four-tier M&S sponge as part of the store’s offer to “create your own” range was not up to scratch

A NEW bride burst into tears when a Marks & Spencer boss called her wedding cake “s***”.

Trinity Hughes, 52, had decorated the four-tier M&S sponge as part of the store’s offer to “create your own”.

It took centre stage at the reception after she tied the knot with hubby Jon, 46.

But when she texted a photo to the store manager who sold it to her he replied, apparently by mistake: “That cake looks s***.”

The newlywed said: “I burst into tears. It spoiled what was a perfect occasion. I am assuming he didn’t mean to send it to me.”

Trinity, from Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, had picked up four white tiers costing £130 two days before the wedding from M&S in Ilkeston, Derbyshire.

It was 12 days later than planned, she said, due to a series of cock-ups, including a previous cake being the wrong colour with a sell-by date before the wedding.

Trinity said: “It still wasn’t quite the right colour, but the manager gave me some flowers and champagne, and said he’d help me carry it out to the car.

"He told me to have a nice wedding, and I said I’d send him pictures.”

She wed design engineer Jon on August 13 in Salford, where he is originally from.

Two days later she sent the manager a photo of the cake, adorned with bride and groom figures. But his foul-mouthed reply left her in a state of shock.

Trinity recalled: “I couldn’t believe it, and texted ‘excuse me?’ I called the number and said, ‘Is that the manager from Ilkeston?’

He said he was, and when I said why I was calling he said, ‘I’m on holiday in Cornwall’, and hung up.”

She added: “I assume he thought he was sending it to someone internal, or a friend. But that isn’t the point. It’s unforgivable.”

A customer services manager told her in an email: “Please let me reiterate Melissa’s (another M&S worker) apologies for what has happened. I was genuinely shocked when she told me.

“I’m currently investigating this with the regional manager. The people he needs to speak to are on holiday until September 5 so unfortunately it might be a little while until we get some real answers.”
