THIS is the shocking moment a man is almost swept away by a giant wave as Storm Arwen batters the coast.

The "stupid" bloke gets a face full of saltwater on the seafront in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, as the killer conditions ripped through.

Footage shows him watching waves come crashing towards him as he stands on the promenade.

As they get closer, the man makes a dash for safety but the water comes crashing into him at speed.

It then rushes along the promenade with force, completely engulfing the guy as he clings on for dear life.

As the clip ends he can be seen miraculously still on his feet - but he has been branded an "idiot" online for standing so close.

One person commented: "Wow. Some people just have no common sense. Absolute madness.

"Yet if they were to be swept out to the sea, we're expected to have sympathy for them."

Another said: "Why stand so close? Think about the emergency service people who may need to save them."

The mystery man was watching the brunt of Storm Arwen which has been wreaking havoc across the UK.

Frozen flurries have swept through much of Britain, bringing snow and gusts of almost 100mph.

Temperatures have tumbled to well below zero and several weather warnings remain in place.

Three people have been killed so far, including headteacher and dad-of-four Francis Lagan who was killed when a tree fell on his car in Antrim, Northern Ireland, on Friday.

A 35-year-old driver was also killed under similar circumstances on the B977 in Aberdeenshire around 5.45pm on Friday, while a third person was fatally crushed by a falling tree in Ambleside, Cumbria.

Elsewhere, around 150,000 homes have been left without power.

Last night, Scotland had 75,000 homes cut off, while England had 55,000 and Wales had 11,000.

And high winds have destroyed buildings and cars as speeds approached 100mph.

In Brizlee Wood, Northumberland, windspeeds hit a whopping 98mph - closely followed by Berry Head, Devon, where 92mph gusts were recorded.

In Orlock Head, County Down, winds of 87mph were noted. Meanwhile, speeds hit 81mph in Aberporth, Dyfed, and 79mph in The Needles on the Isle of Wight.

The mercury plunged to -1.3C in Scotland last night as the bone-shaking chill took over.

And the top temperature anywhere in the UK was just 8.5C in Cromer, Norfolk.

It is set to remain just a chilly today and into next week, clocking -3C in the Midlands, Yorkshire and Northumberland.

Conditions will stay "cold and frosty" with further snow expected in Scotland.

Yellow weather warnings for ice are in place today covering central and eastern England, and north eastern Scotland.

The conditions are expected to make for ";tricky travel" until at least 10am tomorrow.

It is now feared snow could fall for two weeks straight in the killer storm's aftermath, lasting well into December.

WX Charts show the wintery weather will continue next Friday affecting England, Scotland and Wales.
