The airport is a strategic spot that has often been the target of rockets, and is used by both civilians and the military.
The city has seen a significant amount of violence this year, following Ankara's offensive against the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in the country's southeast.
This was launched in July 2015, with strict 24-hour curfews imposed on several Kurdish towns.
The attack itself comes just days after Turkey launched a military offensive into Syria, aimed at driving back ISIS and preventing territorial gains by Kurdish fighters.
