LOOTERS dressed as firefighters and cops are raiding homes abandoned in the Italian earthquake disaster.

Several vile thieves have been caught helping themselves to cash and TVs.

Police in Amatrice, which was worst hit, had to intervene when a mob attacked a man spotted emerging from a house with a suitcase.

One resident said: “Some people are really low. How can you go into the homes of dead people and rob them?

“The damaged houses never collapse on these low lives. That would be justice.”

Further cases were reported in Carbognano and police said they would increase patrols to deter looters.

Meanwhile, funerals for the first victims have been held. A mass service for 35 people was held in Ascoli Piceno and attended by Italian PM Matteo Renzi as the country marked a day of mourning.

The death toll from Wednesday’s 6.2 magnitude quake stands at 290, with at least 15 people still missing.

Among those killed were three Brits — schoolboy Marcos Burnett, 14, and family friends William Henniker-Gotley, 55 and wife Maria, 51.

They died after their holiday villa collapsed at Sommati, near Amatrice.
