When do schools close for Thanksgiving?

Most schools close after classes end on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is always on the third Thursday of every November, which means that the dates for breaks may change, but the number of days students get off generally stays to same.

The Wednesday dismissal date gives students and faculty a four-day weekend.

Letting school out on Wednesday enables everyone to celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday, enjoy Black Friday, and then utilize the rest of the weekend to prepare to enter school again.

Do colleges and universities follow the same schedule?

This depends entirely on what college or university you or your child attends, but most add one extra day to the break to account for travel days.

This means that classes would be out on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday and would resume on the Monday following Thanksgiving break.

This is in addition to fall break, which generally occurs sometime in October.

Colleges aren't required to have school in session for a certain number of days per year like K-12 schools are, so students are allowed more time off for most of their breaks.

Do most kids have homework over school break?

Many elementary school students can be expected to get a true break from school over the holiday.

However, there's no law against issuing homework over school breaks, so many middle scholers, high schoolers, and certainly, college students can expect some sort of homework over the break.

This is especially true for schools that were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic over the last two years, as they are attempting to play catch-up with their lessons.

As for college students, they usually have their exams starting soon after returning from break, meaning it might be the perfect time to study or finish a paper.
