Army bomb disposal teams swoop on Birmingham after five terror arrests

Cops claim explosives team called in 'as a precautionary measure'

AN Army bomb disposal team has been called to the Lee Bank area of Birmingham after five men were arrested on terror charges.

The five men were arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism, police say.

Two of the men, aged 32 and 37, were arrested in the Stoke area of Staffordshire.

Another two men, aged 18 and 24, were arrested at their homes in Birmingham and the fifth man, 28, was arrested in another location in Birmingham.

West Midlands Police say that, as a result of one of the arrests, an Army bomb disposal team has been called in.

They added that this was "a precautionary measure".

Officers are still searching properties in Stoke and Birmingham as part of the investigation.

Tonight an Army Bomb Disposal Team van and a robot could be seen on Florence Street in Birmingham city centre.

Nearby busy roads Bath Row and Holloway Head had also been cordoned off by police vans.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "The arrests were intelligence-led and part of an on-going investigation."

West Midlands Fire Service also tweeted: "Fire crews have been supporting police colleagues with an ongoing operation in the Lea Bank area of #Birmingham."
