Thousands of Leeds revellers make the most of thick mud as festival weekend kicks off
Even the rain couldn't dampen their spirits as festival-goers slid about in the mud on the first day of the annual rock bash
EVEN the rain couldn't dampen festival goer's spirits as the Leeds music festival got off to a wet start last night.
Revellers got down and dirty sliding about in the mud at the annual Bank Holiday rock bash, which kicks off tonight with headliners Biffy Clyro and Fall Out Boy.
Despite the weather fans turned up in droves as up to 90,000 music lovers donned their wellies at the fest, held at Branham Park near Wetherby.
And things are only going to get muddier as fans can expect a weekend washout with up to 40mm of rain and heavy showers tonight as temperatures stay at a hot 18C.
Met Office forecaster Grahame Madge predicted: “We have put a weather warning on Leeds from Saturday 3pm until Sunday 9am for rain.
“Around 20 to 40mm will fall on Saturday, which is obviously a lot of rain.
“Basically, those going to Leeds should make sure they pack their wellies and ponchos."
More than 300 acts will perform across nine different stages over the course of the weekend as the festival, which also takes place in Reading, celebrates its 18th year in the business.
This year’s line-up includes sets from Biffy Clyro, Disclosure, Foals, Chvrches, The 1975 and will be finished with a set from US superstars the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Comedians Russell Kane, Russell Howard and Bill Bailey will also take to the Alternative Stage to deliver stand-up sets.

Meanwhile, those travelling up for the day have been warned of busy traffic, and families heading off for a bank holiday break are advised to avoid the area.
Traffic and delays are also expected on Sunday as the festival comes to a close and thousands of people leave the campsite.
Meanwhile, revellers in Reading were basking in the sun as temperatures soared in Berkshire.
Music fans were spotted sunbathing and enjoying the good weather which was the opposite to the sister festival in Leeds.
