BRITS’ bank holiday weekends are set to be washed out by rain following yesterday’s hottest day of the year.

Yesterday the mercury peaked at 32.2C equalling the hottest August 24 since records began in the 1850s.

Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said:  “Tomorrow will see thundery showers remaining and clearing the south east by mid morning.

“There will also be showers affecting Northern Ireland and western and northern Scotland possibly heavy and thundery.

“Elsewhere will experience a good sunny day with thundery spells with temperatures dropping to the mid-twenties in the south east.”

Saturday and Sunday are likely to see highs of around 25-26C with lows in the north and Scotland dropping to as low as 13C.

Mr Madge continued: “From Saturday into Sunday rain weather warnings are in place stretching across from south Wales up to Liverpool then across to the Humber and down to the wash in a diagonal flash across the UK.

“The flash is likely to encompass the West and East Midlands.

“We are likely to see outbreaks of rain developing over the centre of the UK and by the evening on Saturday they are likely to heavy and prolonged into Sunday morning before dying out.

“That could cause some local disruption to transport and outdoor activities such as the weekends festivals.

“Rainfall totals are likely to be in the range of 20-40mm but the chief forecaster suggests it could go up to 50-75mm in some areas.

“Outside of that Saturday will see a few showers across the north and further south cloud and showers will develop over time including some thunder.

“Warm and humid air will return to the south east as a weather front moves up the UK but a bit fresher near the coasts.

“Outside of the warning area on Sunday we are likely to see some showers and winds.”

Bank holiday Monday is likely to experience highs of around 23C in England with Scotland hitting around the low teens.

He added: “The general overview on bank holiday Monday is there are going to be scattered light showers developing inland during the day.

“Some of them could be moderate in the east.

“Temperatures are going to feel a bit fresher, around normal for most and a much fresher feel across the south east with the humid air moving out with light to moderate winds across all areas.”
