What is the Astroworld Festival?

Astroworld is a music festival founded by Scott, 30. The festival is named after his hit 2018 album of the same name.

The festival was held at NRG Park in Houston, Texas, the same place the Six Flags Astroworld once stood. It was first launched in 2018. The event was canceled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

A number of hit artists including Post Malone, Lil Wayne, Megan thee Stallion and Pharrell Williams have performed at the concert.

Scott has also performed at the event. This year, Tame Impala, Bad Bunny, SZA and others were slated to perform.

Was Astroworld canceled on Saturday, November 6?

Event organizers announced on Saturday, November 6 that the festival was canceled.

"Our hearts are with the Astroworld Festival family tonight - especially those we lost and their loved ones," the statement read.

"We are focused on supporting local officials however we can.

"With that in mind the festival will no longer be held on Saturday," the statement continued.

Organizers said authorities were "looking into the series of cardiac arrests that took place."

They also thanked the Houston Police Department and fire department for their "response and support" and asked anyone with information on the incident to reach out to police.

At least nine people died aged between 14 and 27 after the crowd surged towards the stage while Scott was performing at the festival on Friday. On Thursday, November 11, the death toll of the concert rose to nine.

A crowd of 50,000 showed up for the two-day event, which sold out within an hour of tickets going live in May.

Officials in Texas said the crowd began to "compress towards the front of the stage" at around 9.15pm, sparking panic.

Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña said: “We had at least eight confirmed fatalities today. We had scores of individuals injured at this event.”

He added that a "mass casualty incident" was triggered at 9.38pm and investigations are ongoing.

"At approximately 9.15pm the crowd began to compress towards the front of the stage and that caused some panic and it started causing some injuries," Peña said.

"People began to fallout, become unconscious, and it created additional panic," he continued.

Scott released a statement on November 6 regarding the incident.

"I'm absolutely devastated by what took place last night," he wrote in a message posted on his Twitter page.

"My prayers go out to the families and all those impacted by what happened at Astroworld Festival," he wrote.

"Houston PD has my total support as they continue to look into the tragic loss of life.

"I am committed to working together with the Houston community to heal and support the families in need," he continued.

"Thank you to Houston PD, Fire Department and NRG Park for their immediate response and support," he concluded.
