A super potato weighing a whopping 7.8kg set to smash the world record
A SUPER spud is set to s-mash the world record for the world’s portliest potato.
The uber tuber weighs in at a whopping 7.8kg — nearly 3kg larger than the current holder.
The vast root veg could make 52 large portions of McDonald’s fries or eight 1kg bags of McCain chips. New Zealand couple Colin and Donna Craig-Brown turned up the tattie — which they have named Doug — on their farm in Hamilton.
But they had no idea the monster masher was there as it was found in a patch of cucumbers. Donna said: “We couldn’t believe it. It was just huge but with an ugly, mutant look about it.”
The Craig-Browns lugged Doug into their garage and plonked him on an old set of scales to register a weight of nearly 8kg.
An official weigh-in at a local farm store put Doug at 7.8kg (17lb 2oz). The current Guinness World Records entry for the heaviest potato is a 2011 “Spudzilla” from Northampton that weighed in at 4.9kg (10lb 8oz).
The couple say they have applied to Guinness to have Doug recognised and are waiting to hear back. In the weeks since their find on August 30, the potato has become something of a celebrity. Colin even built a small cart to tow Doug about.
He said: “We put a hat on him. We put him on Facebook, taking him for a walk, giving him some sunshine. It’s all a bit of fun. It’s amazing what entertains people.”

But Doug started drying out and losing weight while mould sprouted.
Colin added: “Doug was getting a bit pongy, so we cleaned him up and put him in the freezer, where he remains.” He thinks Doug must have self-sown and spent two years growing, adding: “It’s one of nature’s little pleasant surprises.”
But Doug may have had his chips — as a brewer local to the couple has offered to turn him into potato vodka.
