Gallant, 44, later got early release due to his actions and he’s now received a High Commendation for bravery from Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick for “selfless heroism”.

Darryn Frost, 38, and John Crilly, 48, who helped fight Khan, also got the award.

A source said yesterday: “It was a highly emotional moment for all three of them, not least because it is the first time they’ve been together since that awful day.

“Each was honoured to have been recognised for their actions, particularly Steve who was recently paroled, is rehabilitated and is determined to go down a different path.”

The trio had been at a prisoner rehabilitation event at nearby Fishmongers’ Hall.
Civil servant Mr Frost also used a tusk, while reformed ex-con Mr Crilly hit Khan with a fire extinguisher.

Saskia Jones, 23, and Jack Merritt, 25, were killed.
