Mayor of London issues dramatic call to Labour Party members to support challenger Smith in brutal leadership battle
SADIQ Khan revealed he will back Owen Smith for the Labour Leadership as he issued a dramatic call for his party’s members to ditch Jeremy Corbyn.
In a sensational turn of events given he had previously indicated he would not take sides, the Mayor of London insisted the Labour Party would be “extremely unlikely to win the next general election if Jeremy remains as leader”.
Writing for , he continued: "The hopes of the members who have joined our party would be dashed again.
“Jeremy has already proved that he is unable to organise an effective team, and has failed to win the trust and respect of the British people.
"Jeremy's personal ratings are the worst of any opposition leader on record - and the Labour Party is suffering badly as a result.

"He has lost the confidence of more than 80 per cent of Labour's MPs in Parliament.
"I am afraid we simply cannot afford to go on like this."
The move means challenger Owen Smith now has the backing of the Labour Party’s most powerful elected politician, and he is in dire need of it.
Although he has been forced to persuade Labour members to back him, Corbyn is still believed to be much more popular amongst the Party membership and registered supporters.
