A 33-year-old man was being quizzed today following the stabbing murder of a middle-aged victim whose body was found in the street.

The man suffered fatal stab wounds in the Sunday evening knife attack and was certified dead at the scene of the incident in Botley, Oxfordshire.

Detectives from the Thames Valley Police Major Crime team rushed to the scene and later arrested the suspect on suspicion of murder.

The victim has not yet been named but a Home Office pathologist was called in to carry out a post mortem examination on his body to establish the exact cause of his death.

Detectives said that he was a man aged in his 30s. His body was taken to the mortuary at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

The police spokesman said that it was believed to have been an isolated stabbing with no wider threat to people living in Botley.

He said: "Thames Valley Police’s Major Crime Unit has launched a murder investigation in Botley. At around 9.05pm on Sunday, officers were called to Pinnocks Way to reports of a stabbing.

"Sadly, a man in his 30s, died at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.

"A man, aged 33 years and from Oxfordshire, has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody at this time."

Detective Inspector Sally Spencer said: “We are at the very early stages of this investigation following the sad death of a man last night.

“We are conducting thorough inquiries in order to establish what has happened and one man has been arrested.

"There is a scene watch in place in Pinnocks Way and it is likely you will see an increased police presence in the local area whilst our inquiries continue.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for their support and co-operation during this time.

"We do believe this is an isolated incident and there isn’t any wider risk to the public.
