But the young tot was saved thanks to the quick thinking of her dog, Polo, who laid on top of the infant to shield her from the flames.

Firefighters eventually managed to enter the home and rescue the baby where they discovered Polo still covering Viviana.

The infant's mother Erika had stepped out of the home to her car when the fire broke out and watched on horrified as flames engulfed her home with her baby and dog inside.

"I just heard her crying and I couldn't get to her," she told US TV channel .

"I tried really hard, everyone in the neighbourhood tried. They were kicking the doors in and kicking the windows out. I couldn't (get her out). Nobody could."

Poremski had burns on her hands and face from when she repeatedly tried to go back into the house to rescue her daughter.

Viviana suffered severe burns to her face, arm and side and is currently in a serious condition in an intensive care unit. Polo died at the scene.

"He was my first baby and now I lost him. And I'm just praying I don't lose her (Viviana). She's all I have and it just happened so fast, I just don't understand it."

She added she is extremely grateful for the support she has received which has seen a page launched to raise £38,000 for the family who are now displaced following the blaze.

More than £20,000 has been raised for the family in just four days.

The page reads: "Any donations would be appreciated. Erika is in need of any help. Please keep these two beautiful souls in your prayers."

Baltimore Fire Department are investigating the cause of the fire, which is currently unknown.
