Where can I watch The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst?

The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst first aired in 2015 and can be watched on Netflix and HBO.

The six-part series was directed by Andrew Jarecki and originally aired on HBO.

Andrew Jarecki had previously directed the feature film All Good Things, which was inspired by Durst's biography.

Durst reportedly enjoyed the film, which led him to get in contact with Jarecki, allowing him to interview him for over 20 hours over several years.

Durst had previously never agreed to be interviewed by or cooperated with any journalists or writers.

Durst seemed to incriminate himself in the documentary series, a claim that his lawyers denied.

In a hot-mic, off-camera moment, he appeared to say, "What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course," but his attorneys said the comments were edited.

On March 14, 2015, just one day before the documentary series aired its finale, Durst was arrested on first-degree murder charges.

In November 2023, HBO announced that it would be continuing the series, with six episodes covering the eight years between 2015, when the original series aired, and present day.

Jarecki returned to direct all six episodes, promising viewers they would be able to see and hear new interviews, additional details in the case, and even Durst's private prison calls.

The series will premiere on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at 10 pm ET on HBO and Max.

The remaining five episodes will be released weekly on Sunday nights.

When was Robert Durst sentenced?

Durst was the son of  real estate mogul Seymour Durst and the brother of commercial developer Douglas Durst.

He graduated from Lehigh University and became a real estate developer.

The 78-year-old was found guilty in September 2021 of killing Susan Berman, who was fatally shot in her home in Los Angeles, California, in December 2000.

Prosecutors alleged that Berman was going to give police information about Durst's first wife, Kathleen McCormack, who disappeared in 1982 and was never found.

He married his second wife, Debrah Lee Charatan, in 2000.

They claimed Berman provided an alibi for Durst after he killed his first wife and that he silenced her to keep her from telling police what she knew about McCormack’s disappearance.

He was arrested for Berman’s death in New Orleans in 2015 the day before the final episode of The Jinx, an HBO documentary series about him, aired.

Durst previously was tried for the 2001 murder of  neighbor Morris Black, but he claimed self-defense and was acquitted in 2003.

His new murder trial didn’t begin until early 2020, but the Covid-19 pandemic also further postponed it, forcing the trial to come to a halt until it eventually resumed in May 2021.

The panel of jurors had been deliberating since September 14, 2021, eventually coming back with the guilty verdict for first-degree murder in the slaying of Berman.

Durst's first wife, Kathleen, has never been found and no charges have ever been brought in connection with her disappearance.

His lawyers have emphasized that there was no weapon, fingerprints, or fibers connecting him to her disappearance and death.

On October 14, 2021, it was reported that Durst would get life in prison for the murder of Berman.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Mark Windham denied a defense request for a new trial.

Defense lawyers David Z. Chesnoff and Dick DeGuerin said they were disappointed in the verdict over the murder of Berman and stated they intended to appeal.

According to , Durst had a net worth of $65 million at the time of his trial.

What was Durst's cause of death?

Shortly after Robert Durst was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Susan Berman, Durst was charged with the disappearance of his first wife, Kathleen McCormack.

However, Durst died before a trial regarding his involvement could begin.

On January 10, 2022, just a few months after he was sentenced to life imprisonment, Durst died from cardiac arrest.

He was undergoing testing at the San Joaquin General Hospital in French Camp, California at the time.

Despite dying in a hospital, Durst was still in the custody of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Following his death, Andrew Jarecki and the team behind The Jinx ultimately decided to continue working on part two of their hit documentary series, which had already been underway since the documentary's first six episodes aired back in 2015.
