What do asphyxiation and strangulation mean?
Asphyxiation is "the state or process of being deprived of oxygen, which can result in unconsciousness or death; suffocation," according to the dictionary.
An example of asphyxia is choking.
Asphyxiation can be a result of strangulation, which is characterized by a compression of the neck that may lead to unconsciousness or death.
However, strangulation does not always lead to death.
The three types of strangulation are:
- Hanging: Suspension from a cord wound around the neck
- Ligature strangulation: Strangulation without suspension using some form of cord-like object called a garrote
- Manual strangulation: Strangulation using the fingers or other extremity
