North Port Police spokesman Josh Taylor said: “I don’t necessarily know what to believe anymore. I think it’s perfectly possible that they’re expressing what they know [...] but we’ll see.”

He continued: “We’ve said from the beginning there’s a lot of oddness here, a lot of things that just didn’t make sense.

“I mean your son walks out there, now they're saying on a Monday, to report that on a Friday, and then be confused about what day that was... there are a lot of things that are odd there.”

Taylor admitted the cops are still “working to figure out” how Laundrie managed to vanish before adding that “no investigation is perfect”.

Those views were echoed by former Washington DC homicide detective Ted Williams who said there was something “very smelly” about the actions of Laundrie’s parents.

Referring to their actions over finding Laundrie’s car in the Carlton Reserve, : “You find the car, you leave the car, you come back later, you pick the car up – there is no Brian.

“There’s something very smelly about that. I would have to believe that the family know more than they’ve actually told about Brian going missing.”

So far, no physical signs have been found in a nature reserve being searched in an attempt to locate Laundrie.

Defence lawyers, whose clients include David Koresh and Robert Durst, say he is best to hand himself in immediately so that his defence team can work on his remaining charges.

"Presumably, there's going to be evidence that he used the card before, and he's going to claim, presumably, that he didn't know anything had happened to her, said Mark Geragos, a leading Los Angeles–based defense lawyer to

“Perhaps they had mixed their funds, and their funds were fungible."

Meanwhile, in light of the charge, Texas attorney Dick DeGuerin, added: "The only thing that a lawyer can do is to advise his client to surrender to the warrant."

"But nobody seems to know where he is, and that's not a good situation for the lawyer to be in because the lawyer may be getting his marching orders from the parents and not from the actual client."

Earlier this week Laundrie’s dad Chris joined authorities to look for his missing son.

The family’s lawyer Steven Bertolino said that Chris had offered to help the FBI and shown them “trails and places” that his son was known to frequent.

The 23-year-old has been missing for almost a month having been named as a person of interest in relation following the death of fiancée Gabby Petito.

The FBI soon issued a warrant for his arrest after saying he "knowingly and with intent to defraud" used a bank card that was later revealed to belong to the missing woman.

Laundrie’s parents told cops their son went missing after leaving their home to go on a solo hike at Carlton Reserve on September 13 and never returned, although they initially said he left their house the day after.

Police found the remains of Petito, his former girlfriend, near a campsite in Wyoming where the couple are said to have travelled.

A coroner later ruled Petito had died as a result of homicide.

Despite a number of possible sightings and tips, as well as Dog the Bounty Hunter joining the search, Laundrie has yet to be found.
