Thousands of shoppers told to leave tourist spot after fire breaks out

WESTFIELD shopping centre in Statford has been evacuated after reports of a fire.

Thousands of worried customers were pictured leaving the popular centre as alarms rang out.

Onewitness added: "On our way to get our train, walking through Westfield and we all get evacuated because there's a fire. Crazy."

A girl called Meghan, from nearby Romford, posted an image of a crowd of shoppers waiting to leave the venue via escalator.

She wrote: "There's a fire in Westfield and we're being evacuated."

Stand-up comedian Ariane Sherine was also caught up in the drama this evening.

She tweeted this evening: 'In Westfield Stratford with Lily. Fire alarm in whole centre.

"Shops evacuated, shutting up; cordoned off area, can't get to Tube. Bit scary!"
