They first met on the set of the 1962 Italian adventure comedy Romulus and the Sabines.

But the pair separated in 1993 after Sir Roger left Luisa for her best friend the socialite Kristina 'Kiki' Tholstrup, though they didn’t divorce until 2002.

Luisa's death was confirmed by the couple's oldest son, Geoffrey.

"Sadly, I can confirm it is the case,” the Mayfair restaurateur said, speaking from Switzerland, where Luisa was reportedly living at the time of her death.

Another family member told The Mirror: "Luisa was ill for some time, so it has been a difficult period for all the family.

“Despite her acrimonious split from Sir Roger, they were reconciled before his death."

Sir Roger himself died in 2017 aged 89 after battling cancer and was married four times.

His first wife was Doorn van Steyn, who he was married to for seven years until they divorced in 1953.

That same year he wed Welsh singer Dorothy Squires, who he divorced 15 years later in 1968.

Roger then married Mattioli a year after the divorce and Tholstrup in 2002.

Fans and famous faces took to social media to share their condolences after her death.

Film producer Jonathan Sothcott wrote on  : "We are very sad to hear that Luisa Moore (Luisa Mattioli) has passed away.
