Officers reportedly told customers that if they do not leave then they could be “stuck in their rooms all day”.

A number of police vans have arrived at the historic hotel and a large number of cops are on the scene.

A huge cordon has been erected around the buildings close to the seafront in Scarborough.

According to staff at The Grand have reportedly been told that bomb squad are on the way to the site.

One guest said: "All the roads are blocked off. We don’t know what’s happened but we were told if we didn’t get out now, we might be in our rooms all day.

"They’re telling everyone to wait by the Royal hotel on the corner.

"Everybody had to get out; all we’ve been told is that it’s a police incident. They’ve blocked all access near the Grand."

A resident living in the McBean building, next door to The Grand, added that they had also been evacuated.

Police have not told them why they have been evacuated or how long they will be out of their homes for.

Another holidaymaker added: "We're just sat in the Wetherspoons opposite the hotels, we're not allowed to go back into the hotels.

"No one knows what's happening, we think it's a bomb scare - they're waiting for the bomb squad.

"But the police have cordoned off the roads, so we're just sat here waiting as we were supposed to check out at 12.

The hotel and surrounding buildings have been evacuated as a precautionary measure

"But we can't get to our car, we can't get to our room, we can't get anywhere.

"They've evacuated The Grand and the Travelodge and I think The Royal as well.

"We were in the room of the hotel and the fire alarm went off and they said 'you need to go out and wait by the Royal Hotel', no one told us anything so that was it. So we don't know when we'll be allowed back."

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police said: "We are pleased to say the incident at the Grand Hotel in Scarborough has been brought to a safe conclusion and the building and surrounding area have now reopened.

"At 10.15am this morning the hotel received a telephone call with what has now been proven to be a bomb hoax.

"Emergency services attended the area and evacuated the building and erected cordon as a precautionary measure.

"Specialist teams conducted thorough checks of the building and surrounding area and have found no evidence of any threat to public safety. Access to the building has now been authorised, staff and guests have been allowed to return and the cordon has been removed.

"The safety of everyone in the area and the emergency services who attended is our priority and we thank the staff, guests of the hotel and members of the public for their patience while we worked to establish the circumstances around the incident."
