AN Army deal for armoured vehicles worth £5.5billion is to be probed after soldiers in them suffered hearing loss, back spasms and joint pains.

More than 300 troops needed medical treatment while testing the Ajax.

The National Audit Office financial watchdog will examine the project after Labour demanded an investigation into faults and contract secrecy.

The deal was signed in 2011 and half the cash given to the supplier.

But only 26 out of 589 were delivered, it was reported last month.
Shadow Defence Secretary John Healey said: “Procurement failure wasted millions.”

An MoD spokesman said: “We want our Armed Forces to have the best vehicles while delivering value for money.”
