Who is Charlie Webster?

Charlotte Webster is an English television presenter born in Sheffield on November 9, 1982.

After studying Language and Linguistics at Newcastle University, Charlie spent time juggling jobs as a personal trainer, amateur model and fitness instructor.

Charlie then kick-started her international presenting career by taking on sports TV work in Spain and Asia.

She later moved back to the UK and scored high profile work with both ITV and Sky Sports.

What did she say about being a victim of sexual abuse?

Charlie, 35, was responding to comments feminist writer Greer made at the Hay Festival.

Greer, 79, told a crowd in South Wales that rape was not a "spectacularly violent crime" and most cases are just "bad sex".

Presenter Charlie was one of many who took to social media to vent their anger at her remarks.

"Rape is NOT trivial," she told her 80,000 Twitter followers. "Survivors PLEASE know your feelings are REAL & validated.

She added: "I will also happily tell you Germaine Greer about how I was repeatedly sexually abused as a teenager and tell you all about what it did to me.

What did Germaine Greer say?

Greer, a second wave feminist who rose to prominence in the 70s, said most rape cases were just "bad sex", the Guardian reported.

She added: "Most rapes don't involve any injury whatsoever... We are told it's one of the most violent crimes in the world – bull****."

Her shocking comments were so controversial that members of the audience left as she spoke.

Continuing her rant, Greer said: "Most rape is just lazy, just careless, just insensitive."

It took five days after Charlie was rushed to hospital with blood poisoning for doctors to detect malaria, and she also had a condition called hemolytic uremic syndrome, as a result of a bacterial infection.

But she was given another operation to aid her recovery which was called a ";miracle".

At the time, Charlie said: "Downton Abbey has just finished and he is going to go on to have a huge career.

"And my career is really exciting. It was the wrong time for either of us to be in a long-term relationship."
