THIS is the shocking moment a faulty lift shoots up more than two dozen floors and throws a man against the ceiling as it collides with the roof of the building.

The man surnamed He, aged 59, had just stepped into the lift on the ninth floor of his residential building in Shenzhen City’s Nanshan District, in South China’s Guangdong Province, when the device began to malfunction.

He reportedly wanted to go to the first floor but the lift doors only partly opened before it suddenly rocketed upwards.

Surveillance footage from inside the lift shows the car then suddenly shooting upwards, with a panicked He pressing his back against the side of the metal box as he watches each floor pass him by through the gap in the doors.

He reportedly believed he would be safe if he positioned himself against the side, but the lift struck the roof of the building after shooting up no fewer than 28 floors and threw him up against the ceiling of the car, causing serious injuries.

As he lay inside the faulty device, He managed to pull out his mobile phone and call for help.

The man’s son was quoted as saying: "He is now stuck inside the lift unable to move. He can only talk."

Local firefighters managed to prise open the lift doors and save He during a three-hour rescue, after which he was taken to the Shenzhen Nanshan District People’s Hospital for treatment.
