Gatwick passengers face most delays as worst airports for travel chaos are named and shamed

Flights out of the country's second busiest airport were delayed for an average of 18 minutes new data has revealed

GATWICK is the UK airport with the most delayed flights new data has revealed.

Passengers at the West Sussex airport faced the most delays during their journeys information from the Civil Aviation Authority showed.

The data, analysed by the , showed that the average delay from January 2015 to March 2016 was 18 minutes at Gatwick.

Luton clocked in at just under 15 minutes with Manchester running in at a close third.

Glasgow then came in fourth at nearly 14 minutes with the worlds busiest Airport, Heathrow, averaging 13 minute delays.

Heathrow is the only airport in the country which deals with more flights than Gatwick but still managed to keep their delay time 5 minutes lower.

The most delayed flight out of the country was the Pakistan International Airlines flight from Manchester to New York JFK which was delayed on average by an eye-watering 88 minutes.

Last week a catastrophic failure of Delta Airlines computer system left all their planes grounded world wide.

A spokeswoman for Gatwick Airport told the BBC: "We regret any delays our passengers experience however several incidents beyond Gatwick's control influenced the airport's performance during this period, including numerous air traffic control strikes across European airspace, impacting the airport's whole flight schedule including our long haul routes.
"Gatwick has more flights to Europe than any UK airport and can therefore be impacted disproportionately by events on the continent."
