What time is the one minute silence today?

In the US a moment's silence is held at 8.46am today - the exact time the first plane hit the North Tower 21 years ago.

In the UK, it will be held at 1.46pm.

In New York the 9/11 Memorial and Museum holds an annual ceremony where the names of those who died are read aloud.

There are also moments of silence at 9.03am and 9.37am - when the second and third planes hit.

These silences in the UK are at 2.03pm and 2.37pm.

There is a moment of silence on 9.59am to observe when the South Tower fell.

At 10.03am, there is another moment of silence when UA Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

At 10.28am, a moment of silence is observed for the time the North Tower fell.

The silences in the UK are at 2.59pm, 3.03pm and 3.28pm.

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum is at the original World Trade Center site.

The memorial features two huge, deep pools at the base of the old towers.

Around the edges of the pools, each almost an acre in size, the names of those who were killed in the attacks are embossed in bronze panels.
