Canada lived with the couple at their home in Chapel Hill subdivision, Douglasville, Georgia.

Officer Thomas Lee Altman arrived at the home after responding to reports of a domestic argument.

"Once inside the foyer area, he was immediately confronted by the suspect, Patrick Canada, who was brandishing a firearm," a police spokesperson said.

"The two exchanged gunfire at this point, but missed one another. Officer Altman’s gun malfunctioned, so he retreated to his patrol car for his rifle.

"As he did so, he saw Pamela Lynn Henn exit the rear door of the home with multiple gunshot wounds.

"Officer Altman then confronted Mr Canada who exited the same rear door. He was able to take him into custody without further incident."

Canada's grandfather Douglas Henn was found dead having been shot multiple times, while Pamela survived the incident.

Police said they were still investigating motives for the shooting, but an argument had escalated when Canada brandished a firearm.
