Over-exuberant Staffordshire bull terrier ‘starts house fire’ after jumping up on cooker and knocking hob

Pet dog Beau was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation

A STAFFY is in the dog house after starting a kitchen fire with its PAW when it accidentally turned on the electric hob, it has been claimed.

The springy pet dog named Beau is believed to have flicked the switch when it jumped up at the oven in a flat in Dartford, Kent, on Wednesday.

The blaze quickly took hold because a microwave had been balanced on top of the oven while the dog's owner was cleaning.

Thankfully an off-duty London firefighter, who lives nearby, rushed to help - and managed to extinguish the blaze before his colleagues arrived.

The dog’s owner needed oxygen after black smoke quickly filled the second floor flat, on Browning Road.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was also treated with a specially-designed pet mask.

John Allwright, Dartford watch manager, said: "We're pleased that no one was seriously hurt but would always advise against storing items on top of cookers as accidents can easily happen.

"But if you have no alternative, please switch appliances off at the wall beforehand.

"If you have pets try to keep them away from naked flames or cooker controls."
