Phillip Waller, Wicker’s communications director, released a statement on the senator’s condition, saying: “Senator Wicker tested positive this morning for the COVID-19 virus after immediately seeking a test due to mild symptoms.
“He is isolating, and everyone with whom Senator Wicker has come in close contact recently has been notified.”
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control, less than one percent of fully vaccinated Americans have had a breakthrough case that results in hospitalization or death.
Who is Roger Wicker?
Wicker is an American attorney and politician serving as a senior senator of Mississippi.
The previously served as a member of the US House of Representatives and the Mississippi State Senate.
Wicker was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1994, succeeding Representative Jamie Whitten.
He served in the House from 1995 to 2007 and was appointed to the Senate by Governor Haley Barbour.
Wicker subsequently won a special election for the remainder of the term in 2008 and was re-elected to a full term in 2012.
The senator also served as chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee from 2015 to 2017 and is a deputy Republican whip.
Wicker was reelected in 2018, defeating Democratic nominee David Baria.

Earlier on Thursday, August 19, Maine Senator Angus King announced he tested positive for coronavirus.
“Despite taking precautions and receiving the vaccine, this morning I tested positive for COVID-19,” King tweeted.
Colorado Senator John Hickenlooper also announced Thursday that he tested positive for Covid-19.
“I’ve tested positive for a breakthrough case of COVID-19,” Hickenlooper tweeted.
The Democratic senator said he felt “good” but will isolate.
“I’m grateful for the vaccine (& the scientists behind it!) for limiting my symptoms,” he wrote.

In a tweet, Graham wrote: “I was just informed by the House physician I have tested positive for #COVID19 even after being vaccinated.
“I started having flu-like symptoms Saturday night and went to the doctor this morning.
“I feel like I have a sinus infection and at present time I have mild symptoms.
“I will be quarantining for ten days. I am very glad I was vaccinated because without vaccination I am certain I would not feel as well as I do now.
Adding: “My symptoms would be far worse.”
In breakthrough cases, the CDC has said that when the person gets sick, they are far less likely to be hospitalized or die from the virus.
