Tom Tugendhat was right to savage the abandonment of Afghanistan to the Taliban
Tug of war
THE early atmosphere in today's Commons debate on the Afghanistan crisis was inappropriately rowdy.
Then Tom Tugendhat rose to speak.
You could have heard a pin drop as the Tory MP, a Territorial Army veteran of the Afghan conflict, savaged the abandonment of the country to the Taliban.
His voice at times faltering, he talked of “struggling through anger and grief and rage”, adding: “I’ve watched good men go into the earth, taking with them a part of me . . . this week has torn open some of those wounds, left them raw.”
We salute Mr Tugendhat, not only for his powerful critique, but also for securing the promise of extra funding for veterans’ mental health.
His leader, PM Boris Johnson, did not fare as well in the debate. We hope the chastening experience spurs him to get vulnerable Afghans, especially children, women and those who helped our troops, to safety quicker than currently planned.
Every hour we wait risks lives.
Brother’s grim
HARRY and Meghan are in the “thrive” chapter of their lives, after their “fairytale romance reinvented the genre”, according to a sycophantic US magazine profile.
Through their favourite ventriloquist’s dummy Omid Scobie, the semi-royal whingers pour scorn on Harry’s brother and father for not taking “accountability” for the couple’s grievances.
Funny how Meg and Harry never seem to bleat about privacy when the article is giving THEIR spin.
Unforgivably, our 95-year-old, recently widowed Queen is also accused of not taking “full ownership” in her “Some recollections may vary” statement.
If Harry and Meg really are so content in their thriving new life and keen to heal, surely it would be better for all concerned if they stopped mudslinging and, as one fairytale princess famously sang, let it go.
Nooo! Whyyy!
SEAN Lock’s death from cancer at just 58 is a loss to comedy.
Unlike some TV rivals, the 8 Out Of 10 Cats star steered away from political hectoring. He was just funny.
Asked once what his obituary would be, Sean replied: “Ideally I’d like it just to say, ‘Nooo! Whyyy! Nooo! Ahhh!’”
We’re glad to oblige, Sean. We just wish it wasn’t anywhere near this soon.

Summer hatin’
AFTER being cooped up by Covid for so long, we deserved a glorious summer of sun and fun from Mother Nature.
Instead, she gave us the gloomiest, coldest summer in a decade — and the driest, yet somehow still managed to squeeze some flooding in.
Truly, it never rains but it pours.
