Cases jumped from yesterday - with 33,904 Brits testing positive for the virus.

This is a significant increase from yesterday's 26,852 cases.

Yesterday saw the highest UK covid deaths in five months with 170 having died from the virus.

It comes as Devon and Cornwall experience a surge in cases after holidaymakers flock to beach spots.

The summer break favourites have seen an uptick in infections since the start of the beginning of the month.

Cases had risen in the two regions since mid-July as Brits rushed to soak up some sun on the coast.

Infection rates for 7-day periods in Devon were at 55.2 per 100,000 people at the beginning of July, with the figure at 247.6 on August 12.

Health chiefs in the area warned that holidaymakers heading to the West are causing infections to rocket.

They have blamed younger travellers, who are likely to have just had one vaccine, or none at all.

Meanwhile, Neil Ferguson said it was "possible" infections could still rocket despite vaccinations.

He also warned around 1,000 people a day might be admitted to hospital, if cases soared.

Yesterday he told the Today programme on Radio 4: "Numbers have basically plateaued at this time and are really quite high, about 30,000 cases-a-day.

"That's a slightly sobering situation coming into September because our contact rates are at half the levels and we will be opening schools going back into offices.

"So we have the potential for quite a large wave going into September/October."
