Mum is furious after her six-year-old daughter almost choked on a bonbon containing a PELLET

Little Abby Sellman spat out the sweet and found a hard shiny lump inside

A MUM was furious when her six-year-old daughter almost choked on a sweet - which contained a hard PELLET.

Leah Sellman, 33, says young Abby was eating sour chewy bonbons when she started to retch at the dinner table before spitting the sweet out.

And she was shocked after discovering the pellet that that had made its way inside the sugary treat - created by burnt GELATIN.

Abby's family believe she could have choked.

Mum Leah, of Plymouth, Devon, said: "We bought some blue raspberry sour chewy bonbons for Abby.

"We got home and Abby was sat at the kitchen table eating them and then I heard her retching.

"She had spat the bonbon out into her hand luckily.

"I checked to make sure there wasn't any left in her mouth, pulled the one she'd spat out apart and there was this thing inside it.

"I'm not sure how to describe it but it was like a black, shiny pellet.

"I cut another one in half just to make sure it wasn't supposed to be there and that one was fine.

"It could have been a lot worse. Abby was a bit panicky. If she'd been any younger she could have swallowed it and choked."

The sweets were manufactured by the Devon-based Crediton Confectionery.

Mrs Sellman emailed the company to complain and has since been given a full apology.

Technical director Michele Deaves said: "Firstly can I apologise for the poor quality sweet that you found within our packet of Blue Raspberry Sour Chewy Bonbons and the fact that it resulted in an unpleasant experience for both your daughter and yourself.

"This sweet is clearly not of the high quality that we would expect.

"From the photographs that you have kindly sent, it looks to me that the black substance is a lump of undissolved gelatin that has burnt within the cooker and then been shaped into the bonbon.

"In our process we used dried gelatin which is first dissolved in hot water before being added to the cooker.

"The cooker operative should check that the gelatin is fully dissolved before added the mixture to the cooker.

"Unfortunately this lump has been missed and then has ended up in the centre of the sweet and subsequently not been picked up by my quality team as it would not have been visible form the outer surface of the bonbon.

"I have discussed this with our production manager and the production team to ensure that every mix of gelatin is thoroughly checked before addition to the cooker.

"I am truly sorry that you have a negative experience with our sweets and would like to offer a selection of our sweets (Fudge, Toffee, Traditional Bonbons and Chewy Bonbons) for you to hopefully enjoy."

Mrs Sellman has accepted the company's apology and a large box of fudge is being sent as compensation.
