Trump sparks fury by hinting that ‘Second Amendment’ gun rights supporters could take up arms against Hillary Clinton
Republican Presidential candidate made the remarks at a rally in North Carolina
PRESIDENTIAL candidate Donald Trump has suggested that his opponent Hillary Clinton could be stopped by his supporters using their gun rights.
The Republican nominee made the comments while speaking at a rally in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Trump claimed Democratic candidate Clinton would appoint left-leaning Supreme Court justices to ‘abolish the Second Amendment’ which gives Americans ‘the right to bear arms’.
However, the gaffe-prone firebrand then said the only way to stop the former First Lady from doing this was the 'Second Amendment’ – a remark which drew gasps from the crowd and vitriol on social media.
He said: "Hillary wants to abolish, essentially abolish the Second Amendment.
“By the way, and if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks.
"But the Second Amendment people maybe there is. I don't know."
Twitter users, including prominent critics of the billionaire, have slammed his comments calling them ‘dangerous’.
Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy said the comment an "assassination threat".
He tweeted: “Don't treat this as a political misstep. It's an assassination threat, seriously upping the possibility of a national tragedy & crisis."
Mrs Clinton's campaign manager, Robby Mook, said "what Trump is saying is dangerous".
But Trump’s campaign insisted that the comment was referring to gun advocate’s ability to vote in large numbers.
A statement read: "It's called the power of unification - 2nd Amendment people have amazing spirit and are tremendously unified, which gives them great political power," the statement read.
"And this year, they will be voting in record numbers, and it won't be for Hillary Clinton, it will be for Donald Trump."
