Horrific moment crocodiles rip prey to pieces as they tried to wade across Kenya river
Wildlife photographer waited for almost two hours as the zebras roamed free in the Savannah.
THIS is the incredible moment an army of crocodiles proved that rivers are no place for a zebra crossing.
Wildlife photographer Ingo Gerlach captured the remarkable shots as the giant crocs tucked into their prey in Kenya’s Mara River.
Gerlach, from Germany, had to wait for almost two hours as the zebras roamed free in the Savannah.
But his patience paid off as he was left with a collection of stunning snaps as the crocodiles devoured the helpless striped mammals.
Ingo said: “An incredible amount of zebras were roaming in the vastness of the Masai Mara in Kenya.
“It was just amazing how many of the striped animals were in the savannah.
“I drove my SUV off the riverbank where I saw a small group of zebras gathered together so I stopped because I thought it would be a great opportunity for some good photos.
“After about two hours of waiting, a large number of zebras headed into the river crossing.
“But all of a sudden, around 30 crocodiles gathered near the crossing.
“The zebras initially moved slowly but moved faster and faster to cross as the crocodiles started to snap.
“In a fast gallop, they raced through the water and the attacks from the crocodiles became more aggressive.
“Then I saw the first zebra being snatched by a crocodile. The croc tore a huge flesh wound in the back of the zebra.
“The zebras defended doggedly for their lives but it was all in vain for some of them.
“But that is what nature is all about – it’s about survival of the fittest.”
