Footage shows him lying in front of passing crowds after the machete attack in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre.

While he waves at passersby for help with his right hand, his left has been turned into a bloody stub.

According to local newspaper website , police are not sure if he was attacked by a shopkeeper, or had been involved in a fight.

Some reports suggested he was attacked for operating in rival gang territory and witnesses described a chase taking place before the barbaric machete attack occurred.

Despite the severity of his wounds, he was taken to hospital where he is in a stable condition, it was reported.
