A SHOCKING video shows a young woman being savagely attacked by a female gang who suspect her of being a mistress.

The violent group is thought to contain the wife of a man who had an affair with the victim of the beating.

A woman in a green dress can be seen lying on the ground and covering her face as blows rain down on top of her.

At one point they even attempt to throttle the woman with shoelaces.

At least three other women, believed to be the wife's friends surround her and try to rip her clothes off.

Reports say onlookers made no attempt to break up the violent attack which continued for several minutes.

The video, which went viral on Chinese social media site Sina Weibo, started a heated debate about "mob justice".

It is not uncommon for women in China to seek revenge in this fashion if their husbands have been unfaithful.

Currently it is unclear whether or not the police are investigating but people have been arrested for similar incidents in the past.
