What was Lord Lucan’s wife Veronica’s cause of death?

Lady Lucan, born Veronica Duncan, is most well known for marrying missing aristocrat Lord Lucan, who vanished without a trace in 1974 after allegedly murdering the family’s nanny, Sandra Rivett.

Veronica was also attacked that same night, and later said her assailant was her husband - adding that he had been violent to her throughout their marriage.

After surviving the assault, Veronica lived for close to fifty more years, before passing away in Belgravia, London, at the age of 80

Lady Lucan was found dead on her dining room floor on September 26, 2017, after taking a cocktail of drink and drugs.

Her cause of death was respiratory failure.

It’s believed she chose to take her own life after diagnosing herself with Parkinson’s disease.

She was reported missing after she failed to join a friend on their regular walks.

When did she marry Lord Lucan?

The two got engaged in October 1963 and married a month later, with the guest list including Princess Alice, Countess of Althone.

A few months after the wedding, Bingham’s father died, making him the 7th Earl of Lucan.

Behind the facade of his title and aristocratic lifestyle, Lord Lucan was facing financial difficulty - an issue only exacerbated by the Lord’s proclivity for gambling.

Despite Veronica remaining largely ignorant to the extent of financial difficulties facing the family, the marriage collapsed less than ten years after the pair said ‘" do".

In 1972, Lord Lucan moved out of the family home in Belgravia to begin a bitter and stressful custody battle over the couple’s three children.

It was a battle he would go on to lose.

Unwilling to accept defeat, Lord Lucan began to spy on his ex-wife and recorded all of their conversations.

His growing obsession with regaining custody, as well as his worsening financial situation, left Lord Lucan increasingly desperate, and possibly drove him to violence.

On November 7, 1974, the nanny, Sandra Rivett, was bludgeoned to death in the family home.

Veronica was also attacked, eventually running to a local pub, covered in blood and begging for help.

She later claimed her assailant was none other than her own husband.

After the attacks took place, Lord Lucan called his mother to ask her to collect the children, drove to a friend’s house in a borrowed car and then vanished.

The car was found abandoned in Newhaven, its interior stained with blood - but its driver, Lord Lucan, would never be seen again

Lady Lucan eventually died from respiratory failure brought on by a cocktail of drugs and alcohol in 2017, after diagnosing herself with Parkinsons

How many children do they have?

Lord and Lady Lucan had three children together.

On October 24, 1964, Veronica gave birth to the couple’s first child, a girl named Frances.

She was followed by a younger brother named George, who was born on September 21, 1967.

As the couple’s only son, George now holds the Earl of Lucan title.

Their third and final child, a girl called Camilla, was born on June 30, 1970.

Camilla would go on to become a successful barrister, working in corporate and commercial law.

Lady Lucan lost contact with all of her children in the 35 years leading up to her death, eventually choosing to cut them out of her will, explaining she did not want any of them to gain financially from her passing.
