Southern Rail Strike: How do I apply for compensation?

Passengers facing delays and cancellations can apply for a refund online

HUNDREDS of thousands of Southern Rail passengers facing a week of strike misery could be in line for compensation.

Train operators have to offer refunds on fares wen services are late or cancelled.

Southern says four in ten trains will not run in an emergency timetable as the RMT stages a five-day walkout over the role of conductors.

As many as 300,000 passengers a day will be hit by the chaos - and here is how to claim a refund.

You can claim money back if your Southern train has been delayed by more than 30 minutes.

That applies both to the usual schedule and emergency timetable in place this week.

If your train is between 30 and 59 minutes late you are eligible for 50 per cent of a single fare and 25 per cent of a return.

Delays of more than an hour get you a full refund for a single and 50 per cent for a return.

Delays of more than two hours will get you a full refund on both single and return tickets.

Season ticket refunds will be calculated on the proportional daily cost of your ticket.

You must claim the refund within 28 days of your delayed journey and you must provide proof of travel such as a ticket or receipt.

Compensation is paid in National Rail Vouchers, which can be exchanged for cash at a ticket office.

But be warned – Southern’s own website says they are “currently experiencing high incoming volumes of delay repay applications so please bear with us while we process your claim”.

First class passengers could also be in line for a refund even if their trains run on time.

To help cope with overcrowding, first class compartments have been "declassified" this week, meaning anyone can use them.
